To kick it off, the Lakeville Garden Club has invited the public to a reception at the Lakeville Public Library this Saturday, from 10 a.m. designates the week of June 3-9, 2012, as National Garden Week." It is appropriate, then, that June 3 through June 9 has been declared "National Garden Week." According to the proclamation read by the Board of Selectmen last week, "gardening furnishes a challenging and productive activity for many citizens, for those just learning as well as those having years of experience and"¦gardening promotes a healthy lifestyle that lasts a lifetime, helps reduce stress from other areas of our life, teaches that rewards can come from diligent efforts"¦in an effort to acknowledge the importance of gardening and the numerous contributions of gardeners, National Garden Clubs, Inc. The adage that cautions not to plant your garden until after Memorial Day for fear of frost was true this spring, as there was a frost night just two weeks ago, but it does seem likely that we're officially out of the woods now. The weather since the weekend appears to be in agreement with such an assessment, hitting the 90s at least a couple of those days, according to the digital temperature gauge that perches at my kitchen window.
Memorial Day weekend, in addition to being the weekend set aside to honor those who died while protecting our country, also serves as the kick-off for summer for most people.
